## Objectives of Association

This association (presided by Kazuo Kadota) was established in July 1997 to help visually impaired people enjoy golf, facilitate communication among volunteers, partners, and visually impaired people, improve quality of life of each member, and accelerate social activities. Visually Impaired Golfers of Japan is the upper organization of this association.

## Present Situation of The Association

This association has ten members and will have five more in 1998 financial year. There is a practice session on the first and third Saturdays on each month with the support of Sanyo Golf Garden in Totsuka, Yokohama. We also have the training rounds at Northern Country Club Nishikigahara, in Kawagoe, and short course training at Chogo Golf Club in Fujisawa.

We had the First Competition of Visually Impaired Golfers in Japan in December, 1997 at Itsuurateien Country Club in Iwaki, Fukushima pref. Five players, including some beginners, together with six supporters from Blind Golfers Partners Group in Kanagawa Pref. participated in the tournament. They all played with their optimal skills

There was a mini golf competition in January, 1998 with the Partners Group, which always helps our activities, at the Chogo Golf Club on a sunny day with remaining snow.

Most of the members of this association and the Partners Group participated in the game. Mr. Yuzo Sakurai (Member of the House of Representatives), Mr. Hiroo Inoue, (Member of Fujisawa City Council), and President Kawai from Chogo Golf Club (Representative of Fujisawa Volunteer Center, Social Welfare corporation in Fujisawa, Kanagawa pref.) also took part in the competition.

The game was broadcasted in the evening news program by Fujisawa Cable Television. Two members from the publicity volunteer group "Hamayu" in Yokosuka were sent to tape the game. The competition was very meaningful in term of promoting golf by visually impaired people.

There was a new year party at a hall near the golf course after the game. All the players and partners enjoyed the game result announcement, the ceremony of awarding, and Karaoke until the midnight.

## Plan in 1998 and the future

Same as before, this year we will have a training session on the first and third Saturdays on each month and a practice round per month. In addition, a regular meeting will be held after the practice on the third Saturday with the Partners Group. It is for exchanging information and facilitating communication. We also plan to give a lecture on golf manner and rules.

In April, under the guidance of the Right Center of Kanagawa pref., we bought "Sports Safety Insurance" for members to enjoy golf without any worries. It was a great achievement and will lead to future growth of the association.

Summary of the association's activities is as follows (including future plan) :

  • Providing practice sessions for visually impaired people to improve skill, manner and knowledge of golf
  • Giving lectures to visually impaired golfers, and facilitating information exchange with Visually Impaired Golfers of Japan and other volunteer groups for promotion of golf by visually impaired people
  • Negotiating with golf courses to allow the visually impaired golfers to play
  • Planning and organizing golf competitions
  • Participating in national competitions and domestic/international exchange for visually impaired people
  • Extending the association's activities and enlarging membership

## Partners Group

Blind Golf Partners Group in Kanagawa Pref. (president : Kazuo Watanabe) is a volunteer association to support visually impaired golfers by guiding them in golf courses, advising them on the choice of clubs, and the distance, direction and situation of the ball. The group has twenty two members.

A member is a person 1) who lives or works for a company in Kanagawa pref., 2) who is sighted, 3) who likes golf, and 4) who agrees with and supports the objectives of the group. Some members have golf instructing license and they are very enthusiastic about helping all members, not only the visually impaired players, to improve golf skill.

## Invitation for new members

All people who never play but want to learn golf, and who have stopped playing but want to start playing again, are very welcome to be a member.

We are looking forward to supporting the people who want to meet more friends via playing golf, enjoy daily life, and participate in the social activities.
